About Film Talks

This year's FILMTalks! brings together 350 students and their teachers, plus community facilitators from various walks of life, to view and discuss the film In America. A semi-autobiographical story written and directed by Jim Sheridan ( My Left Foot, In The Name Of The Father), In America is a story about Johnny and Sara who, with their two young daughters in tow, emigrate from Ireland to America in pursuit of a dream. It is not the typical story of turn-of-the-century immigrants facing prejudice and struggle, but a modern story, set in the 1980's and involving new sets of problems, such as racism and drug addiction in their building and the neighborhood. It is also about the way poverty humiliates those who have always prided themselves on being able to cope. While Johnny and Sara see New York City filled with challenges and dangers, their daughters see it as a magical place where anything can happen - a place that might release them all from the anguish of what has come before.

Students at FILMTalks! will, through the medium of film and breakout discussion groups, explore issues of racism, AIDS, death and poverty, as well as hope, faith and love. This free event will take place at the Cinerama and will include breakfast and lunch.
